Week 7: Planning on conducting the experiment

To have the experiment to run smoothly without error and frequent mistakes, it is important to plan on how to get the reading effectively. But, there is an additional to the plan. For my project, I also have to do some study on the light behavior when there is bending to occur. Surely in optic fiber we knew that bending loss exist when there is major bending on the cable. So, for the loop I will have three different sizes in diameter and the loop will be secured by using a washy tape.

Now, I would have to take readings for all five concentration will be repeated for three times for a size of fiber loop without breaking the uncladded fiber. So, my Supervisor, Dr. Ashadi advises the best solution is to let the fiber loop mounted on the board and just drop the Sodium Chloride concentration onto the fiber under test by using a dropper. For this method, I have to make sure that the uncladded region has been covered fully by the Sodium Chloride concentration before taking the reading from the Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA).

On this week, I went to the lab and have some brief from the technical assistant of the lab there on how to use the ASE and the OSA. I am not familiar with these machine as the machine I have used before during my internship in year 2018 were likely different in functions.

Lastly, I also prepare a table of result accordingly to the process of the experiment so that unnecessary errors can be avoided.
